A FEW ANSWERS
Why
New to Despacio or still thinking about your last dance
What is Despacio
A soundsystem, three DJs, and a community of people who come to dance. Towering McIntosh-powered speaker stacks surround the floor, with sound designed by John Klett. The room stays dark and intimate until the music and lighting come together in a disco ball supernova.
Who are the DJs
James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and brothers David and Stephen Dewaele of 2manydjs and Soulwax. They play vinyl together over long sets, drawing from their own record collections and edits made for Despacio.
What music will I hear
Disco, house, techno, electro, funk, rock, pop, and unexpected things in between. The spirit is Balearic: an open-minded approach to choosing whatever works on the dancefloor. Give the room time to change.
How long should I stay
Give it at least an hour or two. The mood, pace, and lighting develop over a long set. A quick visit can miss the slow build that makes the big moments land.
Which way do I face
There is no front. The DJ booth is deliberately tucked away so the focus stays on the music and the people around you. Move around, find your spot, and dance with each other.
Why is it so dark
The darkness is part of the experience. The mirror ball and lights mark particular moments in the music; they are not on a constant loop. Settle in and let the room unfold.
Should I bring earplugs
Yes. Bring hearing protection and wear it. Clear sound can still be loud.
Can I listen online
Start with the 2manydjs BBC mix, then try the Ghent 2024 recording. The community also keeps a Spotify playlist of tracks heard at Despacio.
Shazam failed me — what was that track
Rare records and custom edits can be hard to identify. Check The Spreadsheet of Truth, or bring your clip to r/despacio or Discord.
What should I know before my first visit
Wear comfortable shoes, bring earplugs and a hand fan, and give yourself time. Explore the room rather than settling at the entrance. Leave space for other people to dance and take breaks when you need them.
Where are the dates and festival details
Check Come Over for gatherings and the event organiser for current schedules, maps, entry, and re-entry rules. These change from one event to another.
